Brown College Bestows Distinguished Alumni Award on Former Congressman Steve Gunderson
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn., May 21, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Brown College presented its Distinguished Alumni Award this month to former U.S. Rep. Steve Gunderson (R-Wisc.), a graduate of the school's broadcasting program who credits the practical training he gained there with providing him the verbal communications skills needed to be an effective legislator.
After graduating from the University of Wisconsin--Madison with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Gunderson attended what was then called Brown Institute, where he earned a Certificate from the Radio Television Broadcasting Program in 1974. A native of Osseo, Wisc., he was elected to three terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly before being elected to the Congress, where he served eight terms until choosing not to seek re-election in 1996.
"I'm a good example of someone with a liberal arts degree and all the theory that comes with such studies. But, I needed the practical skills. That's why I enrolled at Brown," said Gunderson, who received the award at the Brown College spring graduation ceremony.
